Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis
Defined as Progressive weakening of bones resulting in fragility fractures.

Symptoms/ Signs
           Back pain, which can be severe, as a result of a fractured or collapsed vertebra
           Loss of height over time
           A stooped posture
    Fracture of the vertebra, wrist, hip or other bone

A bone density test (BMD-DEXA) is recommended, if you are:
            A woman older than age 65 or a man older than age 70, regardless of risk factors
            A postmenopausal woman with at least one risk factor for osteoporosis
            Older than age 50 with a history of a broken bone
            Take medications, such as prednisone (steroid), or anti-seizure drugs,
           A woman who experienced early menopause






BMD-DEXA

The best screening test is dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). This procedure is quick, simple and gives accurate results. It measures the density of bones in your spine, hip and wrist — the areas most likely to be affected by osteoporosis.



TREATMENT

Medications – Bisphosphonates / Selective Estrogen receptor modulators/ Calcitonin/ Teri-paratide Injections/ Hormone Replacement Therapy in Women (HRT)

Regular Exercise
Avoid Smoking/ Alcohol Consumption
Adequate Calcium and Vitamin D Intake
