Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Children

Type 2 diabetes is a disease more commonly associated with adults. In fact, it used to be called adult-onset diabetes. But type 2 diabetes in children is on the rise, fueled largely by the obesity epidemic.
Symptoms may include,
Increased thirst and urination
Increased hunger
Weight loss
Fatigue
Slow-healing sores or frequent infections

Consultation with a pediatrician or Diabetes specialist is mandatory in case of co-existing high risk factors, like
High Body Mass index (BMI)
Positive family history
Signs of insulin resistance

Type 2 Diabetes mellitus, if left untreated, can damage almost every organ of the body.
Diagnosis can be made by doing the Random blood sugar levels, and Glycosylated Hemoglobin HbA1C

Treatment includes,
Dietary modifications
Physical Activity
Hypoglycemic drugs, oral and Insulin
