DON’T CHOKE YOUR NOSE THIS DIWALI: PREVENTION & TREATMENT OF NASAL PROBLEMS

Research suggests a strong relationship between air pollution and the increased incidence of allergic rhinitis and other allergic disorders. Air pollution has deleterious impact on nasal mucosal surface. It causes irritation of sinus and nose mucosa causing chronic rhinitis and allergic rhinitis as the injured mucosa is more predisposed to allergens.

Air pollution can also cause non-allergic rhinitis. Symptoms are decreased smell, nasal blockage, increased nasal secretion (with or without associated inflammation), and alterations in local immunity & more predisposed to influenza infection.
Fire cracker fumes in Diwali can cause both allergic and non-allergic rhinitis and sinusitis.

Prevention includes
  1. Minimizing exposure to firecrackers.
  2. Use steam which is very effective prevention and treatment.
  3. Use of nasal douche or non medicated nasal saline sprays.
  4. Preventive medications for allergic rhinitis- tablets, syrups & nasal sprays.
Treatment of rhinitis is simple and without side effects. So don’t live with a clamped choked nose or leaky nose.
